Greater Long Island’s Best Bartender Competition: Round I
There is so much more to bartending than creating a great cocktail, so it goes to say that the requisites of a great bartender are more than mixology and often include a balance of social graces, talent, personality, and stamina.
Dan Leopold has been behind the stick of Huntington area’s most famous bars for several decades. From his early days of working at the legendary CoCo’s in the late 90’s, to Huntington’s popular Artful Dodger, Nags Head and others.
Today you can find Dan tending bar up in Cold Spring Harbor at the Sandbar, where the quaint exterior that caters to the socialites of the North Shore packs them in three people deep during “Social Hour,” Monday through Friday, 3 to 6pm. His most famous cocktail, The Whalebone, named for the town’s whaling history.
From martinis with the extra pour on ice to just understanding exactly what type of concoction he can create to please a certain customer’s palette; Dan has a knack for getting it just right.
